10 Mistakes Women Make With Their Beauty Routine –2023 Guide

Put your hand up if you’re guilty of using dry shampoo for days in a row? Or maybe you’re a go-to-bed-with-all-your-makeup-still-on bandit?

Listen, we know we aren’t all perfect when it comes to our beauty routine. It’s so easy to slack off. But there are some areas we all need to improve on and there are some good habits that we should try to establish.

Lucky for us, there are so many YouTube videos with beauty hacks as well as beauty blogs left, right and centre helping us to get in the know with everything beauty.

So here we are, helping a sister out with 10 of the biggest beauty mistakes women make. Some of these you may already know, and some might shock you. Either way it will be interesting to see how many of these mistakes you are making and then learning what you can do to fix them.

Beauty routine checklist

1. Using dirty brushes

This one’s a biggy. Dirty makeup brushes not only affect the outcome of the makeup application itself but also creates potential for skin infections, breakouts and wrinkles in the future. Dirty brushes may contain harmful bacteria and harbours the ideal breeding ground for germs so try and wash them as often as you can. Warm water and a gentle shampoo will do the trick. Just watch all of the makeup run down the sink it’s shocking to see how much product they hold.

2. Applying makeup in poor lighting conditions

Seamless makeup application requires ideal lighting. Natural lighting is always the best option. Poor lighting can misguide you when it comes to applying your makeup. Try and open up the blinds when you’re doing your makeup and perhaps try going outside to see what it looks like in your car door mirrors. This will give you a better indication of how much or how little makeup you have on and whether you have those nasty
lines. Avoid yellow hued lights as much as possible. Invest in a daylight lamp in the British Winter.

3. Too much make up

More is not always merrier when it comes to your makeup application. If you can’t put on a white jumper without staining it you probably have too much makeup on. The term ‘cakeface’ refers to people who wear too much makeup, as it looks caked on and way too thick. Don’t be that gal. You are just as beautiful without the extra layers of powder and setting spray. You should also consider that if you have quite elaborate eye makeup, maybe you don’t need bright red lips as well. Try and either opt for eyes or lips as your feature when you’re getting ready in the morning.

4. Self plucking your eyebrows

Unless you are a professional or have knowledge of exactly what it is you are doing, you should leave them be. Women have a tendency of over plucking their eyebrows and getting themselves in all sorts of trouble.  The best thing you can do is let them grow out then go to a professional who will create your desired look.  They have the proper equipment, better lighting and they know what they are doing.

5. Poor or no skin care

Make up only works to highlight your features and does not treat or remedy your skin faults. Breakouts, dryness, and aging need to be addressed directly using appropriate skin care techniques. It is essential to look after your skin now as preventive care is always better than trying to fix it later. Invest in a good cleanser, toner, exfoliant and all round moisturiser.

6. Colour fails

Using the wrong colour make up for your skin tone is a no-no. Whether you’ve opted for a darker or a lighter shade than your ideal tone, it won’t look natural. If you can see a colour difference between your face and your neck colour you are not wearing the right foundation colour for your skin tone. Go and get your skin tone matched by a professional. Right now.

7. Dehydration

Drink more water. If you don’t like the taste you can add lemon and other fruits to make it more interesting.  You should be having at least 8 glasses a day and although that seems like a lot, invest in a big water bottle and the mission won’t seem as challenging.

8. Not enough sleep

This one is a no brainer. You need sleep to look vibrant and fresh. Turn your phone and tablet off at least 2 hours before bed.  Try to get to bed earlier. No one looks good with bags under their eyes.

9. Not removing makeup

As I mentioned earlier don’t go to sleep with your makeup still on. It’s not good for your skin to skip its nightly moisturiser. Never hit the hay looking like you’re about to go to a party. Plus it’s not good for your white sheets. Jardin de Fleurs is a one-step makeup remover that resets your skin to a healthy pH.

10. Sugar sugar

This one is so hard to keep in check. But too much sugar, too often is not good for your skin. Sadly you will notice breakouts, more old lady liver spots  and a widening waistline. Instead, pick quality over quantity liked dark organic chocolate. Keep a balance. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and veggies. And no, sugar free options don’t count. They are bad for you in other ways.

Which Facial Oil or Serum is Right for My Skin?

Ahhh so I hope this (long) list has helped you work out what you should and shouldn’t be doing in your beauty regime. There are so many things we gals need to remember so it’s okay if you forget one of these every now and then. It’s important to remember though, having a solid beauty routine takes a commitment and you should take it seriously if you want flawless skin. I’d love to hear of any other beauty mistakes you
think I’ve missed.
